We are two racing sailors that decided to go cruising. We sold it all, bought a sailboat, re-fit it ourselves for offshore sailing, and took off into the ocean with the goal of sailing around the world via the capes. Yes, the hard way!
A sailing couple from the fresh water of the Great Lakes, Kate is a middle school Spanish teacher and Curtis is an Entrepreneur. Together we have lots of sailboat racing experience, but cruising presented a new challenge with lots to learn. We are learning lots, from anchoring, to fishing, to off-the-grid systems, and even diving into the underwater world of freediving and scuba diving.
We watched the sailing UA-cam channels like Delos, Sailing La Vagabonde, Tula’s Endless Summer, and Gone With the Wynn’s before leaving and like them wanted to share our sailing and diving adventures with you. Paying it forward with our own vlog. We would love for you to follow along as we visit new places, experience new cultures, and challenge ourselves.

Well it's easy to see you are a natural at suffering but I wouldn't take Roxy just yet. Have fun and be safe.
The Bruce Brown movie called Endless Summer is funny because they go to Tahiti to find surf, and everyone keeps telling them “There’s no surf in Tahiti!”. Of course, it’s mostly out around the barrier reef, and a few spots where the prevailing swell can break through the reef and make it to shore, but it’s pretty hilarious to look back on now that the Olympic surfing is being held there.
Coffee with Sweet Ruca. Oh yea. Good to see Curtis being able to enjoy some fun too. Love Kate's teaching lessons in her narration of these videos. Friendly people and smiles everywhere. Keep having fun and stay safe. Bill
If you sail to Western Samoa be sure to go to open air market and of course Aggie Greys. Sail on!!!
You go girl!!! 🤟 Thanks for sharing this beautiful wave in Tahiti, and your fun adventures on the island ! The Tuna looked amazing 😋🩷🩵
Awesome! So cool you got to see the Olympic Surfing spot!
Beautiful🎉🎉😂😂
👏👏❤️❤️👍👍
Just watched women's heats yesterday, July 27th... or was it the 28th in Tahiti? Never watched Olympic surfing before. It was rather wild at times. Thanks for this vid. Always wonderful.
How old is your dog?
Love hearing all the encouragement - sympatico!
It's the tropics! Rain like fog!! Sail on!
I love your boat so much, it's so beautiful!
In Australia we pronounce Atoll as … “At toll”. Love your videos.
It takes some serious courage to do what you do. Stay safe. May God be with you on your journey.
I’ll be the person inside
Hey that’s awesome you are living on the water and sailing. Todd, Newfoundland
Deep down inside, are you really enjoying the journey?
Of course they are, no truer way to live life
For sure!
@@SailingSweetRuca that's all I needed to hear! I love it!
Corriendo el temporal por las aletas
I love getting all the salt off the boat!
Free boat wash!!!!
You guys need to visit Bora Bora . I've been 2x. Most beautiful tropical place in the world. The Pacific is known for huge waves.you'rethere in time for olympic surfing.
What breed of dog do you have?
She’s a Coconut Retriever 😉
There are lots of sailors on youtube who do interesting things. But there are sailors and then there are SAILORS as you two obviously are. The caveat in your comments above is important. Trips of this level of difficulty require a welll outfitted boat, an experienced crew and even then events come up that intensely test the boat and the crew.
Lots of really sweet moments shown ... I especially liked the bread making in a seaway scene ... one nice one piece! Sorry about your bad Hair Day Curtis ... catch you next time?
This being your 70th "long" video I feel this ASMR is a justified moment of reflection. Great idea.
You guys are the best find the best sailing couple on UA-cam. You guys just do it right all the way down to personal flotation devices.
The boat looked like it handled being pulled along by the bow just fine , a bit like sailing a catboat the only issue is the keel never locks in and lifts so it a bit of a rocking horse side to side.
Everything yall do is spectacular. Keep having fun and stay safe. Bill
That is a beautiful sail
What an accomplishment, congratulations. Hoping to cross the Horn myself one day, but that depends on where my job takes me.
67% of your videos - excluding the shorts - now have been played and for 95% watched ;) Great sailing by great sailors. You're making excellent choices at this point in the journey as to redundancy and spare parts (still, I personally, probably would have thrown in a Hydrovane. Yes, some visual clutter, but such a great tool. And the only kind permitted in some of the single-handed around the world races. But you know that already.) I probably would have replaced the working kit by the new arrivals as a way to make sure it all works and store my own working ones as spares. Or is that what you did and I missed here? And as I am here back from the future, knowing what lies ahead, I have to add that a Hydrovane would not have sent you into jibe or tack because of some sensor issue, but a UFO might have ripped it into pieces - I don;t know what and how it can handle such collisions. Oh, do you have an opinion on echo-location (sonar) devices that can e.g. show you where fish are (100 ft ahead and maybe even 300 ft in other directions where they paint a picture of what is out there)? The frequency range these work in must be far above what, say, whales and dolphins/orca can hear. I tend to think that a forward looking depth sounder might be able to warn you of UFOs.
Love your sailing photography, the set up, content and execution is very professional. The narration is concise making the videos enjoyable to watch. Many other utube sailing channels could pick up some pointers from you.
Please this comment is provided purely at your request for feedback on running square with two headsails> Guys - just a thing - when you are flying sails off a pole ( particularly, really good sails as you have) the most destructive thing you can do is not properly suspend the pole - with a topper and a kicker. leech curl ultimately destroys a sail, headsails specifically that is. by allowing the pole to bounce as the sail loads and unloads - will only increase the rate with which the sail wears and stretches the leech. (essentially the difference in static load vs dynamic shock loading)
Dutch!
Light air I'd wing out the main with vang and preventer and poll out the jib.
Please install some soft deck and netting for your magnificent dog. 😊
Thanks!
Thanks so much!!!
I’m always amazed that you guys fly the spinnaker at all with just the two of you. Takes guts
Try main and jib -port and Starboard.
Brave,very brave.Excellent video of rounding the horn👍
Well Ya Hoo, Roxy the Sea Dog!!!
Why fly a spinnaker when there’s risk of a squall?
Why not? They usually bring decent breeze :-)
@@SailingSweetRuca you obviously have great sailing skill to know the wind speed in a squall so you are not over-powered.
@@MrRoyum some tricks are to look at the height of the clouds, if you can see the rain/squall look at the angle of the rain as it approaches, look at the water for wind if you see white douse the kite, feel for big temp changes and direction shifts, and also you can track them decently on the new gen radars to get an idea of their speed. Being prepared for a quick drop is also important. Practice helps. These weren’t too violent and were only bringing about 20 knots. Skipping between these clouds can be some nice sailing though.
Hi from sunny England, just watching your journey to tahiti the very best thing about your video is the feel good factor you send to us daydreamers just starting on our own new adventure keep yours going 😊😊
Beautiful
Keep on YouTubing for Sailing rather than Sailing for YouTubing!
Wie warm??
Hey guys was just watching this after running across it and wanted to tell you an observation at 12:35-39 minutes/seconds into video the shot of your life raft as you’re filming to stern, it appears to not be secured completely into its holders please double check it! You wouldn’t want to loose it if n rough seas then need it or have the expense of replacing it! It looks like it’s slipping down and out of the binder. Otherwise nice you’re experimenting with different sails etc! French Polynesia is a beautiful place to sail but you need a year to see it all lol! Your dog is beautiful but very very uncomfortable without full length deep cushion under it on the bench in cockpit ! Get some 4-6 inch foam and a nice sheepskin cover for it that zips on and off for washing it’ll keep her/him cool and cushion his/her elbows!! And tip on the bread not rising, wheats that way but wrap it in a dish cloth on the counter instead of leaving it in the pot with a lid !! Great job on the sail out of the pass! DDW sailing is the best lol but yes can be total chop!!
12:33 is the exact time your life raft appears in the video * correction
you have to get the earring now!!!! Awesome teamwork.
Nice soundtrack. Love the mix of footage and music. Perfect for the dream coming true of sailing and arriving in Tahiti. Hope the play hard on the island will fill you with great memories.
So nice to see how y’all are enjoying those new places and gathering together with new people, sharing meals and life. Good people attract good people. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
